In past centuries the woodland around Allercombe Meadow was used for fuel and to graze animals. To achive this the treese were pollarded every 15 - 20 years. This involved cutting off all the main branches of the trrees to about 6ft above the ground.
Around Allercombe Meadow you can see a number of pollarded Oak and Ash trees some of which are 300 years old. The trees that have been pollarded are the ones that have bulbous trunks and a fan of branches a few feet above the ground.
