'The name is a corruption of Brendon, with the'suffix taken from its lord, Ralph, son of William in the 12th century. The village is dominated by an imposing parish church.
John Toms, a glass stainer, was born in the village between 1813 and 1815, and several examples of his work can-be seen in nearby churches.
Brompton
Ralph lies three miles to the north of Wiveliscombe,
and is situated in a pleasant wooded district at the eastern extremity
of Brendon Hill.
Brompton Ralph Church
St Mary's Church was partly rebuilt about 1740 and there
are vestiges of a Roman camp in the near vicinity. The church is conspicuous
by its position and has a tall tower and it retains its old oak
seats.
