.Brownsham Moors is part of the Brownsham - Clovelly Site of Special Scientific Interest and has an excellent mixture of habitats, including wet and dry grassland which has never been fertilised. It supports a wide variety of birdlife and insects and many uncommon plant species, notably yellow bartsia (which is only found very locally in the south-west and Ireland), the very rare Cornish moneywort and the lesser butterfly orchid. Marbled white and dingy skipper butterflies can be seen here, as well as hoverflies only found in old meadows and some very rare wasps.
The farm buildings in the area also provide shelter to wildlife, including lesser horseshoe Bats at Higher Brownsham. The Grade II* listed farmhouse here dates from the early 17th century and contains a highly decorated plaster ceiling. It is open by appointment.
Locally referred to as Culm Grasslands are wet, acidic, grazing pastures which have developed over the geological formations of sandstones and shales known as Culm Measures. They contain a characteristic mixture of marshy grassland, bog, wet heath and scrubby woodland and support a wide range of wildlife
This Site of Special Scientific Interest is especially rich in wildlife. Deer, barn owl and snipe can be seen, as well as the endangered marsh fritillary butterfly, and many uncommon plant species including rare orchids.
