Doverhay House Porlock
The museum's Medieval Herb Garden reflects the plants grown for medicinal and culinary use when the Manor was built.
The Building dates from 1450 and was built on the site of a much earlier dwelling. It would have been a very grand house, partially made of Welsh stone, with handsome oak beamed ceilings, a richly traceried window and stone fireplaces. It is a fine example of a 15th Ceentuary Manor House.
The Main Hall contains artifacts related to the village and information about the authors, poets, and painters who lived and worked in Porlock. There is model of Porlock Hill, an ancient stone font and many paintings. One depicts the heroic Overland Launch of 1899.
On the Stairs you will pass a wall painting of three Figures in the costumes of 1500. In the Upper Room, with its splendid ceiling, you will find a natural history cabinet and early agricultural, household and trade items.
The Museum is a Registered charity. It receives no local or national funding. We remain open solely by public donation and the dedicated efforts of our trustees, helpers and committee members. Please give generously. You will find a Donation Box in
the Entrance Hall.
