Peppercombe

There is a constant sound of water as the stream makes its way through the valley to the sea by way of a mini waterfall .

Unique red cliffs with sand along the beach at low tide, this is possibly the quietest and most secluded beach in the area.

The lovely little Peppercombe valley forms part of the Portledge Estate, bought by the National Trust in 1988 from the Pine-Coffin family, to whom it had belonged since the time of Henry II (1154-1189). The valley itself is a mixture of woodland, scrub, grassland and marshy habitats rich in wildlife. As well as rare lichens, there are woodland plants such as moschatel, sweet woodruff and wood millet. Within the areas of open grassland, marsh orchid, early purple orchid, ragged robin and betony are found, as well as the pearl-bordered fritillary and dingy skipper butterflies. The exotic species of plants growing at Peppercombe, such as bamboo and fig, are remnants of the ornamental gardens of the Portledge Estate.

Just above the beach at the bottom of the valley is Castle Bungalow, constructed entirely of wood. One theory is that it was brought here in sections by horse and cart from a mile up the coast; according to another, it was floated down on a raft! The bungalow, and several of the cottages in the valley are owned by the National Trust or the Landmark Trust and let as holiday cottages.

Peppercombe with its unique red cliffs with sand along the beach at low tide is ideal for walkers and dog owners with a delightful walk from Horns Cross through woodland to possibly the quiestest and most secluded beach in the area.
